I'm a happy little [livejournal.com profile] chaoswolf. I just got my laptop back. I recieved a call during load-out about the fact that my laptop was back from Fujitsu. I wasn't expecting Dad to remember to get it today. I'm currently writing this from my laptop, and it turns out that nothing got erased, not even the fucked up linux partition.

nothing got erased...

Hooray!

I'm a bit surprised, but only a bit -- they probably have a diagnostic disk they stick in while they're testing the system, or possibly a CD. Since there was nothing wrong with your disk to begin with, they didn't have to touch it.

We can either upgrade it to the latest Xandros, Fedora Core, or Debian. In any case, we'll stick in a network card that I know Linux supports, before we get started.

No point in that

You already have the partition -- we can just copy the Linux install from Matrix to Coruscant and install an ethernet card that Linux can recognize. For that matter, a newer kernel might already have the drivers, and there's apparently a package that will steal your Windows drivers and use those.

We should at least *try* to get it working, in other words.

Linux...

I'd also like to add that the Linux we installed before was pretty old; they've gotten much better about dealing with laptop hardware since then. And I already have ethernet and wireless cards that work well with Linux even if we can't get those pieces working.

You'll be much better off having only one machine to lug around, and if you want to be able to use both at once, at home, there are solutions (VNC, X, and VMWare) that let you do it with a single keyboard and display.
