I've got the app filled out. Need to build a resume. Not good @ it. First time, never done anything this psychotic in a while. Need help. A tip from [livejournal.com profile] johno said to make lists of classes I took/classes towards my major and ask people for thier input on any special skills connections that might be within that. Here goes something in no particular order.

Classes I've taken

  • Algebra I-III

  • Beginning Drawing

  • Ceramics I

  • Stellar Astronomy

  • Beginning Fencing (French foil)

  • Inter Cultural Studies: Asian American Experience

  • Intro to Fiction

  • U.S. Government/Economics

  • 3D computer design

  • Latin (1 year)

  • Spanish (1 year)

  • 3 years of Teacher Assistant

  • General Psychology

  • Writing Labratory

  • Guitar I

  • U.S. History - Prior to 1800s

Conventions I've volunteered for:

  • BayCon: Bay Area Science Fiction Convention

  • SiliCon: Silicon Valley Science Fiction Convention

  • Further Confusion: Anthropomorphic Animals Convention by Anthropomorphic Arts & Education

  • WesterCon: West Coast Science Fiction Convention

  • LosCon: Regional Southern California Convention by Los Angeles Science Fiction Society

  • WorldCon: World Science Fiction Convention

  • NASFic: North American Science Fiction Convention

  • Consonance: Science Fiction & Fantasy Folk Music Convention

My various duties:

  • Watching doors

  • Badge checking

  • Moving boxes

  • Washing dishes

  • Helping disabled guests

  • Providing information

  • Managing a radio in a convention Operations room

  • Organized volunteering groups for Further Confusion & Consonance

Um....I think that's all the listy stuff. Instructions are as follows: Look for patterns. Post comments that have connections you made between certian things and try to categorize the patterns as "special skills." I am too dense/tired to try and look for patterns in these things, and it's probably easier for me to get feedback from others than it is for myself to read through it. Thanks a bunch.

My first impression is that the most impressive in the list is volunteer organizing. List the other con duties as something like, "Ensuring accommodations are provided to disabled guests and miscellaneous duties assisting security operations, communications, and general logistics." The point is not to exaggerate any skills or accomplishments but to point out that you've been repeatedly left with responsibilities because you're trusted.

Also remember that a resume rarely gets a job—it gets you in the door to talk to someone, and it's a basis for an interview. Definitely list all the cons and dates for them. Set it up for the conversation you want to have, which is someone being quickly convinced that you'd take care of the Crown Jewels if offered a job doing so and then asking you about conventions, fandom, and your other interests. All CC students will have a range of classes they've taken, and someone interviewing students desperately needs a hook on a resume so they don't have to ask things like, "What's your major?" and "What were your favorite classes?"

One last thing: You're shopping for a boss as much as the other way around. I mean, there are some things you have to do for all jobs, but you want to gauge the job as much as have the potential boss gauge you.

The specific classes are less important than the general areas; you haven't picked a major yet so that isn't something you can point to yet. Fencing goes under "sports" or "hobbies".

The most important thing is having run volunteers; this means that you were in a responsible position and carried it off well enough to be asked back. Disabled liason is another good one to highlight, and door-watching goes under the heading of "security". Mention number of hours over your last N years of volunteering -- that's impressive and shows that you're a hard worker and community-spirited.

Take a look at the [livejournal.com profile] flower_cat's resume, and copy the format. You can find mine at /~steve/resume.txt on the internal network. It's very out of date, of course.

Well, you organized voluteering groups for a couple cons. That shows organizational skills, that's always good.

ChaosWolf
somewhere in CA, 9XXXX
phone, cell, email

job statement/goal statement (what you hope to learn or contribute from said job.
i wanna learn how to be a better wolf and catch my prey , etc etc

schools attended/any special classes taken at said schools. years and contact info
School of Furry

Cosplay, VA

then you'd normally list and previous job experiance, so list some of your volunteer stuff here. but try to keep it pertinnet to the job your applying for.

then list any other special skills which may pertain to that job that you want

like computer skills or art experiance, foreign languages, etc.

and thats about it hope this helps
