Things happen. Next?
Aug. 27th, 2003 10:44 pmSee subject. Didn't do much today. Woke up @ the crack of noon. Tried to enjoy my day w/ out the gidgit, but for some reason I didn't have as much fun as I thought. Still thinking about the new laptop, and I am terribly sorry to do it,
mdlbear but I need a computer that can connect w/ the school network. Besides, I would like to watch DVDs during cons anyway.Sold a book this weekend, still waiting for payment on it.
gridlore might be interested in said book I sold, which I still have another copy or 2 of lying around the house: Cyber Generation, the sequel to Cyberpunk. Probably have a few more RPG books under the bed....if anyone's interested, drop me a line & we'll talk.
Did randomness plotting. Trying to get into the mindset for college, going to try and wake up when my sister does. Not going to be very successful, probably, but I will try. Plotting for future conventions, like LosCon, Consonance, FurCon, etc. Trying to get SCA event information as well, hoping that I can go to a few and try to keep up with school at the same time. The LARPs, I don't know. I may have to sacrifice my werewolf to the BSDs or I may have to just leave her aside. I don't know what I am going to do about that, but we will see what my workload is like.
Other things have been going. I'm this close from my 2 year anniversary mark w/ Mayhem (My Sr. prom pictures 2003). She is one of the people who I care deeply about, and I am going to suprise her on the 9th of next month by showing up w/ a dozen long-stemmed red roses, provided (hopefully) by
flower_cat.
Laptop...yay! A Fujitsu Lifebook S-series 6k. DVD reader, CD-R/W drive, WinXP OS. The OS is the only sucky thing about the laptop, but it only weighs 4.5 lbs and has wireless/ethernet! I love this computer and I don't even own it yet. Need to get it this weekend on Sat or Sun if possible. Would like to have it Fri to geek @ the picnic with...but we don't have to have it by then.
That's all my randomness for now.

Date: 2003-08-28 08:26 am (UTC)Of course, when she is ready to scrap XP, a Linux install is only a Knoppix disk and three or four questions away. Dual boot would be ideal, but I'd probably have to get a recent version of Partition Magic for that.

Date: 2003-08-29 08:54 am (UTC)Aside from that, 2K has had more field "experience" and thus more fixes on it. You can say those were also incorporated into XP but I don't buy it.
Having to support a large customer base with a variety of Windows OS versions from 3.11 through XP, I can say that XP creates the most confusing customer experience to date. Customers that are experienced Windows users dislike the new layout options and lack of icons on the desktop now that they moved it all onto the start menu. Customers that are new to Windows are just confused by all the "features" that they don't understand.
Finally, as usual they added "features" to XP that are a royal PITA. A built-in "firewall" feature that doesn't indicate anywhere on the screen that it is running and the fact that it's enabled by DEFAULT is supposed to help the customers who don't know any better. But then when they try to do anything online and have problems, they don't know where to look for it. We have people who install PcAnywhere so remote technicians can dial in and help them but they can't connect. Why? The firewall "feature" that's being ever so useful.
Windows2K is a solid piece of OS. It's field-tested and proven. It's not pretty but I am of the opinion that an OS doesn't need to be pretty. It needs to let me run the programs I want to run and that's what 2K does. XP bogs me down with crap I don't want or need much moreso than any other Windows OS I've used.
But mostly it's because they made it harder to steal. ;)
