Something completely different. I was watching [livejournal.com profile] mdlbear & [livejournal.com profile] cflute's two-fer and heckling. [livejournal.com profile] johno said "If you're going to convince him to produce one, when's yours due out?" So I took that as a hint. Besides, I don't think I'm that good though some people like me. I wonder....Tell me the truth.

[Poll #685393]

Anyways, [livejournal.com profile] mdlbear thinks my guitar playing needs work, so his damned realism blew my optimism to pieces.

Fix your tags. Keep practicing your guitar. Don't let that stop you; Every guitarist from Santana on down still needs to practice, so that's certainly no shame.

Do it do it do it! I'll buy one. I bet Eric would put it on Filk.com if we all asked him nice.

So, what kind of songs are you putting on your album? Covers are fun of course, but even better when the new version is extremely different from the old one but still musically interesting. A non-filk example: I like the girl solo plus tinkly piano version of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" ever so much better than Nirvana.

There's nothing wrong with planning an album and taking your time?

Think long-term: many projects are unable to be completed in a short time. Frustrating? Oh, yes. But take enjoyment from the process, then.

Do it for fun

If it isn't for fun, you don't need to make a recording because you want your father to. That's fun for HIM, you know that's really why he does it.

As for musicality, well, in filk that's an option. Would you want to play guitar on your own recording? If so, do it. If not, you certainly can find somebody to play for you, and it doesn't have to be limited to guitar. It doesn't have to be limited to only your own stuff, either. If there's something you really love, and would like to record, well, you know enough people who can help you find out if there are any legal issues, and otherwise, it's fair game. (I would be interested in a cover by you of all the songs that were written FOR you. It seems there are a lot out there. ;-)

You're not a good writer because your father is [livejournal.com profile] mdlbear.

You're a good writer because you're a good writer. You have your own style. The way to get better at anything is to keep at it.

The best thing about filk is that you can throw in ANY instruments. An all-kazoo choir? Fine! Electric guitar, fretless base, and drums? Great! Bass... and mackeral? Sure!

And have [livejournal.com profile] mdlbear teach you an "open finger tuning". You'll have instant chords on the guitar with almost NO thought.
