Another thing, I got my laptop today. It's a nice computer. Need to bug mr_kurt about freeware for it.

I probably (at some point) need to work on the term papers, and I'll do that after dinner.

1. install the software-development stuff (called, I believe, x-code). This includes an X server that you will need to run free software developed for other Linux and Unix machines.

2. download and install Firefox and OpenOffice.org

3. search for something called "fink" -- this is a project that has ported a large number of Debian packages to the Mac.

OK. X-code is probably on the install disk.

Firefox is on my computer, and OO is around somewhere.

The mac versions of Firefox and OOo are almost certainly not around the house somewhere, unless you've downloaded them recently. Last time I snarfed copies, nobody in the household had a mac.

Fink has an immense amount of software, ported from Debian. Thousands of programs, though mostly under XWindows.
