Well, tonight was definatly interesting. I was thinking about picking up some 2way FRS radios for con usage, considering the possibilities of an underground roadie runner network. For those of you who were at Consonance 2003-2004, you are aware that I ran a small volunteer group there known as the roadie runners for the con. The equivalent of gofers, and the basic purpose of this network I am trying to build is to try and get a rotating shift of people to watch the lounge. I know there is one, and I don't remember what its hours are. But, I'm the only staff working it AFAIK.

Cheap radios available @ like target or Amazon for $16-19, though I try to go for the rechargable ones.

The filk lounge usually opens at 8pm though attendence is usually sparse until after 10pm. It closes when everyone leaves, you kick them all out, or the room has to be turned for day programming.

Right, right. Still, underground network of runners is what I'm trying to achieve.

I watch for clearance sales at Target, Micro Center and Wal-Mart among others. I've got a collection of about ten FRS units right now (not all of which I could lay my hands on at one time.)

Rechargeable is nice if they're all the same unit . . . privacy codes are OK . . . but I also just use a lot of rechargeable AA and AAA batteries (a cheap source is Harbor Freight Tools off Mowry in Newark.)

Also, a set of alkalines seems to last through at least one con, so if you have the spare batteries around . . .
