Camera equipment ain't cheap. Sure SD cards may be simple....but the Nikon camera kit (that should arrive the Wed before BayCon) was not cheap. My wallet bleeds from a $51.20 wound I just cut into it.....
And the cam I got (which I picked up from OfficeMax, btw...) set me back about $200 or so. Not pleasant. Worth it? Hell yes. But damn is it pricy. And let's not forget the 256MB card that I want to get for it....which will probably be = if not < what I just payed for the kit.
You have any recommendations on what to aim for? Generally I've been waiting until I get around to getting say....Canon's 5megapixel Powershot series...
It varies a lot -- the $99 price goes with whatever they need to dump that week. Lately it's been some older Minolta and Kodak models. (My favorite neighborhood camera store/repair place, Kamera Korner at the corner of Bascom and Parkmoor, says that Kodak and HP are essentially impossible to fix if they break. They have some cameras in the $120 range that are likely to be more reliable than what Fry's is selling.)
If you want something thin enough to slip into a pocket and get carried around everywhere (like the Casio Exilim I bought recently), you're probably looking in the $200-300 range unless you can find one on closeout. If you want light, compact, great ergonomics, but not necessarily super-thin, Nikon (like chaoswolf's) is very good. Other than that, if you're just looking for something to get started with, almost anything is going to be good enough.
My only other piece of advice is to stick with SD cards, which are more common than the alternatives and so more likely to be swappable with whatever your next camera is, not to mention PDAs. This eliminates Olympus and Sony; tough for them.
