I got an email today from De Anza College. No big suprise....OTOH, it was kinda disappointing to find out that I still have a 1.7 GPA. I'm trying to bring it up. Really. Now I have to go through an "academic success seminar" in order to get my probation status removed.....FUCKING HELLL!!!!!!!!!!!

I know you are.

My first (and only) term at DeVRY (yep, that "not a welding school" advertised on TV), I got two D-'s and 3 Bs (IIRC). If I had stayed there, I'd have had to re-take: dBase III and Lotus1-2-3. This was 1989, so it was all DOS and faked graphics.

Nobody has to tell you that you are smart. And I doubt that anyone has to tell you that college is a game (just like high school, but the rules were translated in to Greek and back, and then upgraded to version 4.0).

If it means you back down the class load to focus on the two or three classes for the term, then do it. I've taken one class in the Summer when I really wanted to make sure I had a "5-unit" A on the transcript. It sure helps in the end when the final gpa is scored based on total grade points/total units. Nobody cares if you slacked a term by taking only 1, 2, or 3 classes. And that's speaking from experience with a very final 3.25 (180 units completed...over-kill, but whatever) at Foothill for a double-Associates.

Babe, email if you need support, encouragement or a Doc Martin's to the rear.

Hugs,
Sandra (facilities@conzilla.info)

That first sentense doesn't read without context: it's regarding your disappointment.

::confused:: aren't these DeAnza classes? Aren't you taking more classes there in the future? If so, the total gpa is what hiring managers (and transfer colleges) look at first.

That's why I take them as a single class in the Summer (or the term when not much else is happening). I'm not great with Trig. I've tried 4 times with 3 different teachers. Ain't gonna happen unless that is the only thing in my life outside of my job. So, not until after Conzilla for me to just take it to get over it.

History is another. I have a hard time remembering dates/places and the order of events. If it's straight memorization -- ain't happening. If there's something I can relate it to, or the instructor is a "story teller" type...I just might get a C out of it.

I just tried to check my FH transcripts....while they only list one of my AA's (Speech Comm vs. the Radio Broadcasting - Performance), IIRC they also listed all the W's and such. I saved my butt a couple of times by W-ing a class and taking it over the next term.

And no matter how long it takes, getting it donw is the important part. I still don't have my BA/BS, but it's on the short range radar (<5 year) to get it finished. And the over all gpa is what matters, not individual classes. So pump up the gpa taking what you enjoy (for me it was taking 90% of the Speech classes at FH to counter the really low C's and a couple of D's I got in Science/History).

Chaos, play the game.. I agree with galtime1... Lower your classes plus (don't scream) take some class that you think you can Ace academically. So take one or two classes. Talk to your mom, dad and sister as a unit. Tell them that you need to have the time and privacy to do your home. In addition, you may have to trim your extra activities.. Big Auntie here... You need to concentrate on you schoolwork.. Don't scream at me??!!! I have had this problem before in college. hugs and quiches.. Give me a call.

Babe, I so understand. find out *exactly* what Dad's insurance needs for you to qualify. Is it 12 units and a C-average? Is it whatever DeAnza says is 3/4 time? Find out. Take one tough class, one kinda tough class (and something you like) and the two "cake" classes. That way the two A's will help raise up the harder two classes. Or if you can find three classes and a Phys Ed, do that. Phys Ed used to only be .5 or 1 units, but even a 1 unit A will help raise a 4 unit D to 1.6, and if you got a couple of 3 unit B's ... tada! 2.36, Almost a C+ (if they still do those things).

Hrmm...is your GPA the way it is due to classes where you still have a D or F in? The only way to easily boost your GPA is to retake those classes so it replaces (technically it just masks it) your GPA.

That way is faster than just taking other classes and getting a higher grade because those other grades still drag the average down x_x

Hist 17A...that was one of my tough ones. Pre-(some point in time) Western Civilization, right? I only survived because of two things: Instructor was a clown, and a C wasn't going to kill me.

Hist 17B...I struggled to get into the Honors version (qualified for honors with all those Speech classes, and just barely). It was more of a round-table than a lecture-hall. I still got a C in it, but it was more entertaining.

History seems to be all in the instructor. I was fortunate that throughout my school career, I got instructors who thought dates were trivial, but wanted us to look at historical events as if they were happening NOW, and have opinions, rather than viewing it as dubious "facts." You might want to check around and see if you can find out if there are any instructors who are like this.

Being at De Anza and I did get one D in economics, shhh don't tell anyone, the best thing to do is start taking easy classes. Take things that interest you ie...computers, art, music...the easy stuff. Also, GE that interest you. De Anza has an excellent tutoring program. Sign up!!! I did and I got a great tutor for Math. Math wasn't one of my best subjects. I think there is unit offerings with that too if I recall. If you go once a week for the quarter you get one unit which might help the GPA. Good luck.
