I don't know about California, but you can get someone mandatory care in Florida if they're a danger to others or themselves. Yes, this means you narc on someone, but it's to help them if they've stated a desire for suicide. Really.
writercat84 is a different situation because a competent person has a legal right to refuse medical treatment, knowing full well the consequences. I hope she only gets a scare and her fencing instructor yells at her!
