What I am looking for are some real basic answers. Why do people think this way? What reason is there for them to kill themselves if by their death they will be hurting others more than they will be hurting themselves?

If you really are looking for some answers, here are some. These answers don't speak for everyone; they are just things that have been the case with some people.

Sometimes, they don't think they will be hurting others more than they will be hurting themselves. Sometimes they really, truly believe that everyone will be happier without them. Or that, at worst, everyone else will heal and be OK eventually, while they (the person contemplating it) feel like they will never heal from the pain they're in.

Sometimes the pain is so overwhelming they just want it to stop. Sometimes they want to escape. Sometimes that simply drives everything else out of their mind and they cannot think.

Sometimes they believe they have done and/or are doing too much harm to others, especially to people they love, wrongs that they believe can never be righted or made up for. Sometimes they've even tried to right those wrongs, and failed, or at least believe they've failed.

There are plenty of other reasons besides these, but these are certainly out there.

Here's hoping your friend finds understanding and healing.
