Apparently what happened to you at Amazon is their standard operating procedure. Hire cheap contractors, give them impossible goals, and fire them before they have time to improve and maybe make more money.
The gallery software I was using is called "gallery" -- I found it cumbersome to use and nearly impossible to update (and it needed frequent updating because it was full of security holes). I'm pretty sure there are better things now.
