Canada visit --- Day 1

Today was interesting. Played Heroes V and napped. Went swimming with selkit, Loial, Trapa, 'Yote, and Kaefox only to have my dear genius of a fox dive off the board and scrape his head on the bottom of the pool. He keeps telling me not to worry, but that only makes it worse.

As of right now, he's working and moving at the speed of molasses when we're supposed to be going out to pick up some first aid stuff for that cut of his and also food-things that I will eat. Doesn't seem that it will be happening anytime soon that I can tell, though I could just be being pessimistic again.

I'm trying not to worry so much about things, though it seems to be in my nature to do so. It could just be my imagination, though I am not sure if anything I've tried so far has worked. I'm not feeling any different.

OH boy, a slow poke. You're gonna need to learn to just go without him if you're not going to live a life of waiting and waiting for him. Otherwise, you are as likely as not to go hungry. Forward Momentum!

Tell your Fox that he needs to take care of that cut, but you shouldn't worry too much -- scalp cuts bleed like anything but are basically harmless.

Scalp injuries are moderately harmless.

This worries me. If someone came to the first aid station and reported this to us, we'd be asking a lot of questions like:

1) how long ago was it?
2) did he just _scrape_ his head or did he actually _hit_ his head? how hard did he hit?
3) did he pass out right after or at any time?
4) is he feeling better or feeling worse now?
5) has he had any concussions or head injuries in the past?
6) is he alert and oriented to time, person, place and event?

We'd also do a detailed exam, take vital signs and document everything, which we call a "long form" because it is.

The pattern of answers we want to see is something like, "No, it was really just a scrape" to "he was dingy for a second, but now he's totally fine, see." As opposed to "he's not feeling so well, he's out of sorts, he just kind of sits there, he doesn't know where he is . . ."

With that second set of answers we'd call 911 and request paramedic transport, holding C-spine in the meantime and putting the victim on high flow oxygen.

Unrecognized severe head injury is that serious. The brain is a sponge floating in fluid. If bruised, it can bleed or swell up ... and the skull gives it nowhere to go.

The standard post-care for a mild concussion is moderate rest and to have someone stay with the person and check on them for the next twenty four hours, waking them if necessary for checks. If they start acting sluggish or disoriented, if you see pupils of different size or odd shape, or they pass out for no reason (or when asleep, cannot be woken up), get emergency medical help immediately.

I'm sure it's nothing, but I'd feel that I'd done my EMT license a disservice if I didn't post the above.

He's fine. Just his work is taking up a lot of his time, thus his speed at completing this to move on to other things is slowed.

Glad he's OK. I know you value him a lot, and he's a cool guy. He also has a healthy chunk of that "let's ignore the pain" thing, which is useful in some cases but not in others.
